The Magical World of Mark and Maria

The Book

A long time ago, when the earth was young, a magical cloud floated over one small area of land, showering it with enchanted raindrops.

The drops soaked deep into the soil and resurfaced as springs.

The mystical powers in the springs created a realm full of natural wonders and mythical creatures. This is how Mark and Maria’s magical world came to be.

About the Author

F. G. Lawrence grew up in Hawaii, where he spent much of his time in the sun and surf. He has always appreciated Greek mythology and folklore and the wisdom the stories contain.
In writing this book, F. G. Lawrence reinvented many of his favorite folktales while adding a few of his own. Authoring this book has brought him much joy, which he hopes to share with all who read its stories.

The Genie and
the Curly-Tailed Pig

“Here’s your genie. He’s all yours
for the next fourteen days.”

“He’s big,” Mark blurted out.
As he continued to stare at
the genie’s sinister smile, he
trembled. “He’s r-really b-big.”

Then Mark’s eyes moved to the genie’s large, curved sword that he kept in his belt.

Why does he need such a big weapon? Mark thought.

The King and
the Cannibals

“Help!” he screamed. “I am the
king. I command you to let me go!”
“Yummy!” said one of the captors
who was holding down the net.
“We have a king!”

His Royal Majesty stumbled and
fell onto his back. He looked up
at the hunting party that had
caught him. Oh no! Cannibals!
he thought. Darn it! And I was
so close to having that elk for dinner.

The King and the Carpet

King Patrick held up the carpet and said, “This is brilliant. I need to find someone to copy this and put it in my kingdom. “No one said a word.
Maria and Newton glanced at each other, then hide their eyes from the king.

All that could be heard was the rattling of the coach and the clopping of the horses’ hooves.

Mark’s mind had been drifting. He wasn’t thinking when he blurted out, “A carpet would be easy to make. It wouldn’t take much work at all.”

An Odd Little Town

Maria grabbed Mark by the shoulders. She looked him right in the eyes. “I don’t have a good feeling about this place. We need to leave now.”

“Leave?!” exclaimed Mark. “Why would we leave? Everything’s so cheap. We could have anything we want. Let’s stay for at least a couple of days.”

“This town’s strange. Something’s not right. We should get out of here as soon as possible,” Maria replied.

Andrew the Angel

“Do you know about Andrew the Angel?” Maria asked.

Mark gave her a curious look.

“When the baby’s born, Andrew will come. He has to touch the baby’s forehead to give the infant a future.”

Andrew moves fast, but if we pay attention, we might be able to see him. And if we’re quick enough, we can catch him and force him to tell us the baby’s destiny.”

Maria Tells a Story

Maria took peanut butter and jelly sandwiches out of her picnic basket and gave one to Mark.
They watched the clouds drift by. They looked for animal shapes and pointed them out to each other.

As they relaxed in their secret hideaway, Mark asked Maria, “Do you have any new stories for me?”
She smiled and said, “Yes, I’ve got one for you.

Gently Down the Stream

They spent all afternoon together, and when dinnertime came, they had a picnic in the park. As the evening was coming to an end, Mark walked Maya to the inn where she was staying.

As they were saying goodbye, she looked deeply into Mark’s eyes and said, “I like this town. I’m supposed to leave tomorrow, but I’m going to stay.”

How to Catch a Naughty Monkey

Andy the monkey heard the party sounds coming from the dining room. He really wanted to join them. The key to his cage was lying close by.

He stretched his arm between the bars, but it was just out of reach. He saw an artist’s brush nearby. The determined monkey got the brush and used it to drag the key closer. And then he grabbed it with his bony little fingers.

Andy couldn’t wait to join the group. Whenever he went to a dinner party, he had three favorite things he loved to do. One of them was eating.

The second was swinging. With food on the table and lights hanging from the ceiling, the grand dining hall was where he wanted to be.

The little monkey surprised everyone when he scampered into the room and jumped onto the table. First, Andy darted from dish to dish, grabbing food and stuffing it into his mouth. Then, with food in hand, he leaped up to the lights and started swinging from one dangling fixture to the other.

The excited monkey moved onto his third favorite thing to do at a dinner party which was throwing….

Mr. Love

As Mark watched Mr. Love tending to his
tomato plants, he thought, He knows I’m
here. I’ll wait for him to finish
what he’s doing.

Mark took a deep breath and relaxed. The
world around him seemed to slow down.
His gaze shifted to the ground. He noticed
the many tiny creatures that lived among
the rosebushes. Ladybugs, praying mantises,
beetles, and many other insects were
crawling about.

Above the tomato patch, a koala munched
on eucalyptus leaves as he looked down at

Mr. Love. A black-masked raccoon leaned
against the base of the tree. She also
watched the gardener as he worked with
the vines. Next to Mr. Love, a butterfly
fluttered and landed on a red tomato.

As Mark looked around the garden, it
suddenly dawned on him that all the
creatures were aware of Mr. Love’s every
move. All of the animals, big and small, were
in love with Mr. Love.

Even the blossoms on the plants and trees
were slowly turning towards him, like
sunflowers following the sun.
